Raksa’s Journey with Inclusive Cambodia: From Student to Coach and Beyond

Raksa is a 20-year-old college student majoring in English Literature at Institute VDC, Phnom Penh. She works at Inclusive Cambodia as a Teaching Assistant and Jiu Jitsu Coach.

Discovering Jiu Jitsu

Raksa’s journey with Project Aokas began in 2018 through Empowering Youth in Cambodia (EYC), an NGO founded with the mission to uplift underprivileged youth through free supplemental education. At the time, she was attending their lessons regularly. “They introduced to the jiu jitsu training available at Project Aokas, providing self-defense skills and boosting confidence.” she remembers, which convinced her to attend it. Raksa then quickly found a passion for it, appreciating its benefits for her physical health and its self-defense techniques.

From Student to Coach

Raksa’s dedication and enthusiasm were undeniable when she expressed her will to challenge herself by assisting our coaches during the classes. Her hard work paid off, and she eventually became a coach herself, leading Aokas’ Sunday training sessions.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of her work that she mentions is seeing the progress of her students. Seeing their attentive eyes while she teaches, the precision in their moves week by week, reminds her of her own journey. “Project Aokas offered me more than just sports training. Jiu-jitsu, in particular, has changed my life”, she reflects.

Teacher at Koh Dach Clinic

In addition to her coaching duties, Raksa also works as a specialised teacher for Inclusive Cambodia, teaching children with disabilities three days a week. “These jobs taught me so much in life experience. They also boost my confidence and I try to stay as positive-minded as possible in my daily life.” The salary she earns supports her family and helps fund her studies.

Future aspirations

Raksa’s future plans are driven by a desire to give back to her community and continue her personal and professional development. She aims to continue teaching and training both our beneficiaries from Inclusive Cambodia and Project Aokas, helping them discover their talents and grow stronger and fitter. Personally, Raksa is committed to improving her Jiu-jitsu skills, with the goal of competing and joining Cambodia’s National Team. She also aspires to complete her university studies, enhance her English language skills, and secure a decent job to support her family and herself.

Raksa’s journey from student to coach, and her ongoing commitment to teaching and personal growth, exemplify the power of inclusive education and empowerment of society’s most vulnerable ones.
